DIALYSIS AND KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION

Beneficiaries:

People residing in Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions can benefit from the Dialysis and Kidney Transplantation Program free of charge.

Scope of the Program:

When kidney can no longer function properly, dialysis is prescribed. Its main purpose is to artificially remove metabolic waste products and excess fluid from the body. There are two types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

Hemodialysis is a treatment method performed through an artificial kidney machine. It is applied when the kidneys no longer function and can no longer expel harmful substances from the body. Hemodialysis cannot fully replace the kidneys, but thanks to it, a person continues to live and work in one way or another.

Peritoneal dialysis is performed in the abdominal cavity of a patient. During peritoneal dialysis, the peritoneum, a tissue that covers the abdominal cavity and covers its organs, acts as a filter. A plastic tube called a dialysis catheter is surgically placed in the abdominal cavity. Subsequently, a special fluid is released into the abdominal cavity and washed around the intestines. This form of dialysis can be done at home, avoiding hospitalization.

Vascular access during hemodialysis (as needed) and catheter implantation/explantation (as needed) during peritoneal dialysis are funded under the Universal Healthcare Program.

Kidney transplantation coverage of kidney transplant surgery - Reimbursement is provided for one transplant procedure, up to a maximum of GEL 20,000.

Provision of immunosuppressive medications for organ transplant recipients (including Simulect for induction immunosuppressive therapy and with antithymocyte globulin for patients at high immunological risk).
